I don’t know what it’s like to be a mother, but I am so grateful we get to experience having a mother, and I’m sorry if yours wasn’t always a good one, or perhaps you never had one at all.
I have one. And she has taught me more about grace and unconditional love than anyone I know. My mother epitomizes the woman in Proverbs 31:
“A good woman is hard to find, and worth far more than diamonds. Her husband trusts her without reserve, and never has reason to regret it. Never spiteful, she treats him generously all her life long…She’s up before dawn, preparing breakfast for her family and organizing her day…First thing in the morning, she dresses for work, rolls up her sleeves, eager to get started. She senses the worth of her work, is in no hurry to call it quits for the day…She’s quick to assist anyone in need, reaches out to help the poor…and she always faces tomorrow with a smile. When she speaks she has something worthwhile to say, and she always says it kindly. She keeps an eye on everyone in her household…Her children respect and bless her…The woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God.” -The Message
A mother’s role is to protect and nurture her children. I am so grateful to have a mother who has done that so beautifully throughout my life, who has gone from being a mother to a great friend. She has shown me the incredible motherly qualities of Christ, His gentle and forbearing ways. That’s how God uses mothers- to show us more of His character.
I have been so blessed to grow up in a nurturing and safe home, with a mother who has loved me through all of my rebellions, fears, pains, and joys. She has never once shamed me but rather only offered her unconditional support, and for that I am beyond grateful.
I hope you have had had a mother like that, because it changes everything about you. The gentle nudge of a mother’s love can move mountains for you; that support and investment in your life can take you places you never dreamed you could go.
That’s what love does.
Whether or not you experienced an unconditionally loving mother here on Earth, you have one in Heaven, and He is always for you. Whatever wounds may have been inflicted by your mother, He heals. Mothers have a powerful role in this life, and they can use that role for good or for bad, but when they use it for good, Christ’s character is displayed like no other.
If I become a mother someday, I hope to do half as good a job as mine.
